What Is Found and How It Is Removed
With automatic PDF redaction, the text of every page is read and checked against patterns: 13 to 19 digit card numbers that pass the bank check digit, IBANs, Aadhaar, PAN, US Social Security and UK National Insurance numbers, email addresses, phone numbers and dates.
Each match gets a black box, and the count for each kind is shown, so you can see at a glance what was found. Names and addresses have no fixed pattern, so type them under Also find these words.
When you save, pages with boxes are rebuilt as images with the boxes burned in. The words under them are gone from the file, so they cannot be copied, searched or recovered. This is what makes automatic PDF redaction safe, unlike a black rectangle drawn on top.
